eSIM for Europe: do you need one, and where does it help?
With an Austrian or German SIM, EU roam-like-at-home already covers most of the countries in Saily’s Europe plan. The plan earns its place on trips that include Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Turkey, or when your home tariff’s data allowance is too small for the trip.

When the Europe plan makes sense
- Trips with a leg in Switzerland, the UK or Turkey: they are outside the EU roaming rules. A1 and Drei charge extra there; Magenta counts the UK in its EU zone (table below).
- Multi-country routes such as Vienna – Zurich – London, where one plan replaces several roaming packages.
- When your home tariff has a small data allowance: EU roaming uses your domestic plan and its fair-use policy, it does not add data.
- Travellers whose SIM is not from an EU/EEA operator.
When you probably don’t need it
If the whole trip stays inside the EU and the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), an EU SIM roams at domestic prices; the European Commission says the scheme also applies in Moldova and Ukraine. A Europe eSIM then only helps if your domestic allowance runs out.
The EU rules do not apply when your phone connects via satellite on a ship or plane. Switch off roaming or use flight mode on board.
Turkey: set up the eSIM before you travel
Saily’s Europe page notes that access to the Saily app may be limited in Turkey due to local restrictions, and asks you to set up the eSIM before travelling. Install it at home on Wi‑Fi so the line is ready when you land.
Country plan or Europe plan?
Compared with the Saily country plans TripUtils tracks (smallest plan with at least 5 or 10 GB and 30 days). In 3 of 3 countries the 5 GB country plan is cheaper than the regional plan, so the regional plan pays off mainly when you visit several countries.

Common questions
Do I need an eSIM for Europe with an Austrian or German SIM?
Usually not for EU/EEA countries, where roam like at home applies. Extra data matters for Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Gibraltar and San Marino: they are in Saily’s Europe plan but outside the EU roaming rules (some operators include some of them anyway, so check your tariff).
Does Saily’s Europe eSIM cover Switzerland and the UK?
Yes. Both are in Saily’s 35-country Europe list as of 20 Oct 2026, together with Turkey, Norway and Iceland.
Does the Europe plan work in Serbia, Montenegro or Albania?
No. The non-EU Western Balkans are not in Saily’s Europe list. Saily sells a separate Balkans plan for them (see the Balkans page).
How much is Saily’s Europe eSIM?
As listed on saily.com on 21 Oct 2026: from US$4.99 for 1 GB / 7 days; the largest fixed plan is 50 GB / 90 days for US$95.99. The live price is always on Saily.
How many countries are in the Europe plan?
35, according to the country list on saily.com (21 Oct 2026). The full list is above.
