How much eSIM data for a trip in North Macedonia?

✓ Prices checked 22 Oct 2026

For 14 days in North Macedonia with normal daily use, TripUtils estimates 6–9 GB. A 10 GB plan is the usual buffer. Not a live price. Skopje city use and lake days in Ohrid fit normal use. Saily’s North Macedonia plans stop at 3 GB, so a week or more usually points to the Balkans regional plan.

Roaming in North Macedonia on an Austrian plan: what A1 and Drei charge

North Macedonia is outside EU roam-like-at-home, so the EU data in an Austrian plan does not apply there. Published prices, checked on 22 Oct 2026 (euros incl. VAT):

NetworkOptionDataPrice
A1Roaming Pass (Zone 1)per started GB€4.90
A1A1 Roaming Datenwoche2 GB, 7 days€4.90
DreiRoaming-Paket Go1 GB, 15 days€5.00

For the 10 GB planning size (14 days), A1’s Roaming Pass would bill 10 × €4.90 = €49.00, the A1 Roaming Datenwoche 6 × 2 GB = €29.40 (packages run 7 calendar days, Austrian time, and can be stacked). A1 says the Roaming Pass is switched on automatically for every tariff signed since 24 June 2026, and it blocks roaming data at a default limit of €60, which you can raise yourself.

Magenta prices depend on the tariff — look them up in Magenta’s roaming finder. Older tariffs without these options can cost more. Sources: A1, Drei, Magenta.

Paying in North Macedonia: Macedonian denar (MKD)

In North Macedonia you pay in MKD, not euros. For a euro account, card payments and ATM withdrawals in MKD are foreign-currency transactions: many banks add a foreign-transaction fee or a marked-up exchange rate. Check your bank's fee list before you go. If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in euros instead of MKD, choosing MKD is usually cheaper, because otherwise the merchant's or ATM operator's rate applies.

Roaming in North Macedonia: why your EU plan does not cover it

North Macedonia is not part of the EU’s roam-like-at-home area. The six Western Balkan countries dropped roaming charges among themselves on 1 July 2021, but that only helps local SIMs. For EU SIMs, 38 EU and Western Balkan operators signed a voluntary deal capping data roaming at €14 per GB from 2026 and €9 from 2028 — it applies only if your operator takes part.

In June 2026 the Council of the EU authorised negotiations to bring the region into roam-like-at-home. Nothing changes for travellers until those agreements are concluded and in force, so check your own tariff or compare it with an eSIM.

Assumptions and sources

Light 0.20 / normal 0.50 / heavy 0.95 GB per day, plus optional extras, plus about 20% buffer. No live retail prices.

Summer at Lake Ohrid is the busiest period; the GB model stays the same.

Common questions

Is 10 GB enough for 14 days in North Macedonia?

Skopje city use and lake days in Ohrid fit normal use. Saily’s North Macedonia plans stop at 3 GB, so a week or more usually points to the Balkans regional plan. The 6–9 GB estimate plus buffer lands on 10 GB. Hotel Wi‑Fi is not counted. Streaming video on mobile is the usual reason to go larger.

Should I roam in North Macedonia instead?

North Macedonia is outside EU roaming. As of 22 Oct 2026, A1’s Roaming Pass bills €4.90 per started GB there (zone 1), the A1 Datenwoche gives 2 GB for 7 days for €4.90, and Drei sells 1 GB for €5 (valid 15 days). Compare that with an eSIM quote for the same GB.

Is North Macedonia included in EU roaming?

No. North Macedonia is outside the EU roam-like-at-home area. Talks to extend it to the Western Balkans were authorised in June 2026 but are not in force; until then your EU tariff can charge extra — up to €14 per GB in 2026 on operators that joined the voluntary price cap.

Is there one eSIM for a Balkan road trip?

Saily sells a Balkans regional plan covering Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia (as listed on 18 Oct 2026). It costs more per GB than most single-country plans, so it mainly pays off when you cross borders.

Do you show live Saily prices?

No. The plan table on this page is a dated snapshot from saily.com (22 Oct 2026); the live price is always on Saily. The GB figures are TripUtils estimates.
